SALEM : Tamil Nadu government has issued an ordinance upgrading Namakkal, which is a municipality, to a municipal corporation. In 2010, Namakkal was upgraded as a special municipality by merging 9 panchayats including Nallipalayam and Kosavampatti. As a continuation of this development, the Tamil Nadu government issued an order in this March month, upgrading Namakkal to a municipal corporation.
A proposal has also been sent to the government to merge 12 panchayats with the corporation. According to this, the population, area and annual details of expanded corporation details as follows.

The annual revenue of the municipality is 45 crore rupees, the revenue of the corporation will exceed 47 crore rupees.

While the 2011 population of extended Municipal Corporation area is 1.78 lakhs, the population is expected to raise to 3 lakhs in 2024, as per officials.
